Eurotunnel has signed an €11m contract with Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) to install a new radio communication system in the Channel Tunnel to provide interoperability with the European railway network by 2014.

The contract will run until 2025 and will involve the provision of network sharing and fixed terminal servers equipment, and maintainance of the track-to-train radio system used on the Eurotunnel infrastructure.

The partnership will develop an open and interoperable European network for both freight and high-speed passenger trains.

In 2009 Eurotunnel signed a contract with Alcatel-Lucent for GSM-R, the first phase of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
