DB Regio Tyne and Wear (DBTW) has won the operator of the year award at the 2011 Light Rail Awards for its better management of the UK’s Tyne and Wear Metro.

The company has significantly improved the service for the 40 million passengers that the two metro lines carry every year since it won the concession to operate them in April 2010.

The initiatives included a ‘100 day clean up’ project to spruce up stations and Metro cars.

The company said it provided Tyne and Wear Metro with extra services, more staff on the ground, and cleaner, brighter and more reliable trains.
