The history of the Goldschmidt Group dates back to 1847 when the company Theodor Goldschmidt AG was founded. The Marmaray tunnel in Istanbul will be officially opened on 28 October 2013, by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish Prime Minister. This historical tunnel project under the Bosporus will directly connect the railway networks of Asia and Europe for the first time. The infrastructure project consists of the 13.6km tunnel and also the development and modernization of 63km of existing railway lines, three new railway stations underground and the modernization of 37 further railway stations.
