MEN presents a new computer-on-module (COM) featuring the Intel® Atom™ XL processor, an upgrade from the Intel Atom which makes it possible for the user to operate the board in the extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and provides a higher memory capacity. MEN’s COM module XM1L can be equipped with a number of different Intel Atom XL processors according to the specific requirements of the application.

The XM1L is MEN’s latest ESMexpress COM, based on different Intel Atom XL processors which offer a maximum power dissipation of 7W at a speed of up to 1.6GHz. Unlike its predecessor, the Intel Atom XL is tested and qualified for the extended temperature range.

Highlights of the new XM1L

  • Intel Atom XL, up to 1.6GHz
  • Up to 2GB DDR2 SDRAM
  • 2x PCI Express®, Gb Ethernet
  • SATA, USB, SDVO, LVDS, Intel HD Audio
  • Operates at -40° up to +85°C with qualified components
  • Conduction cooling

The COM module is used on a customer-specific carrier board on which the I/O interfaces can be accessed. Dependent on the processor version these include a combination of PCI Express links, LVDS, SDVO, audio, SATA, Ethernet with Wake-on-LAN function and USB. Additional COM interfaces can be made available on the carrier board via USB to COM conversion.

The DDR2 SDRAM with a size of up to 2GB is soldered against shock and vibration. The memory capacity can be extended by a USB Flash on the carrier board.

A board management controller for monitoring all board functions completes the functionality of the XM1L. For testing of the XM1L and for developing the application, the universal carrier board XC1 in ATX format can be used. The XM1L can also be plugged onto COM Express carrier boards (basic form factor type 2) via the adapter board AE12.

ESMexpress modules

The XM1L is qualified for an operating temperature of 40°C to +85°C with conduction or convection cooling. Like all ESMexpress modules it is installed in a closed housing which also guarantees 100% EMC protection. The dimensions of all ESMexpress modules are 95mm x 125mm.

ESMexpress modules are complete computers on a plug-on module. By configuring the I/O on an individual carrier board the functionality can be tailored to the application, saving costs and time-to-market.

The ESMexpress standard has been developed for applications requiring highly robust electronics which ensure safe and reliable operation even in harsh environmental conditions. This applies in particular to the fields of railway and avionics, partially to industrial automation and medical engineering as well as mobile applications in general. ESMexpress is currently in the process of ANSI-VITA standardization. The official designation will be ANSI-VITA 59, RSE Rugged System-On-Module Express.
