Irish Rail awarded the contract to Synectics through a competitive bid process.

Synectics chief executive Paul Webb said: “This contract represents the first step into on-vehicle heavy-rail solutions for our Synectics Security business, building on their experience and strong track record across light-rail, underground and tram markets.

“Irish Rail is our second public transport win in Ireland over the last few months and reflects our growing reputation for smart technology developments that meet next-generation operator requirements.

“Our solutions open up new opportunities for rail operators to transition their video management capability to the Cloud to improve passenger safety, security, and to drive operational effectiveness.”

As agreed, Synectics will develop, deliver and install a safety-critical IP video surveillance system for the trains to boost safety. The system will ensure full connectivity between the train and the engineering depot as well as other operational locations.

The installation works are expected to commence in September next year.

Subsequently, a five-year in-territory additional support contract will become effective concerning the maintenance of the surveillance systems.

Earlier this year, Irish Rail awarded a €32m contract to Indra for the development of a train control centre in Dublin.

The centre will be equipped to supervise the overall 2,400km railway network in the country.
