Swiss federal railway operator SBB has awarded a ten-year maintenance contract to Alstom for its European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment.

Alstom installed the ETCS on-board equipment for 500 vehicle types from 2003 to 2008 under the first phase of work. SBB has now extended the €25m contract by ten years, with a provision for an additional three years.

Under the contract, Alstom will provide logistics management for repair and calibration and upgrade on-board ETCS components. It will also be responsible for refurbishing measurement equipment, obsolescence management, technical support and training.

Alstom Switzerland managing director Cora Hentrich-Henne said: “We are very pleased with the confidence that SBB has placed in us with this contract extension.

“Our aim is to ensure the availability of spare parts and of the large SBB fleet, thus making an important contribution to the smooth operation of rail traffic in Switzerland.”

ETCS is the signalling and control element of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and is designed to monitor whether trains adhere to speed limits and signal statuses.

Alstom’s Neuhausen site in Switzerland serves as the direct contact point for local customers. The Charleroi site in Belgium is its main centre for testing, service and maintenance.

Last week, Alstom completed modernising the signalling of the Recoletos Tunnel in Spain.

Last month, Alstom Ubunye, a joint venture of Alstom, inaugurated a modernised rail factory in Ekurhuleni, near Johannesburg in South Africa.

In September, a consortium of Alstom-Setec Ferroviaire won a €50m contract to supply digital signalling technology to the French national railway corporation SNCF Réseau.
