The new line will be part of the C-E 65 rail corridor running between Zduńska Wola Karsznice and Chorzów Batory.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “Over the past ten years, PORR has realised numerous key railway projects for PKP PLK. This tender award underlines the successful cooperation of everyone involved, as well as our far-reaching expertise in the infrastructure sector. This technically demanding mega-project will add significant value to the backdrop for goods transport in this metropolitan region.”

PORR will design and build the two-track section of rail line no. 131. The new 23km-long rail line is integrated into the pan-European AGTC network and the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

During the construction period, PORR will work on a total of 77km rail track, 15 station platforms, 200 sets of points, and 66 engineering structures.

The company will also build the control command and signalling, along with the catenary.

PORR said that the modernisation of different rail sections connecting the Polish regions of Śląskie and Łódzkie would help in enhancing safety, diminishing environmental impact and increase access to those with limited mobility.

In December 2020, PORR and STRABAG secured a tender from Vienna public transport provider Wiener Linien for the first phase of the connected construction project in the city.

Under the metro expansion plan, four new stations will be constructed as part of the redirection of the U2 line, and nearly 7km of tunnel will be driven.
