Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced several improvements to the Sydney’s CBD and South East Light Rail project, to offer better services with enhanced capacity, improved traffic flow at key intersections and less overhead wires.
The government will work with the project’s preferred bidder, the Connecting Sydney consortium, to implement the new improvements on line.

Transport minister Gladys Berejiklian said: "The proposal offers services that from day one carry up to 15% more light rail passengers in peak hours, and 33% more seats across the day.
As part of this plan, the government also aims to deliver modern light rail technology that will eliminate overhead wire in a large part of George Street.
Berejiklian added: "The technology uses a third rail that provides power from the ground as a vehicle passes through. This negates the need for catenary or overhead wiring."
"Other proposed improvements will include an alternative construction method for the tunnel under Anzac Parade and through Moore Park to reduce the impact of construction by a number of months on Anzac Parade."

By GlobalDataIn addition, it plans the relocation of Royal Randwick Racecourse stop to the north side of Alison Road between Anzac Parade and Darley Road, in order to reduce impacts on the racecourse and improve bus access during major event.
This improvement programme also includes the amended design for the Grosvenor Street stop, flood mitigation changes at Centennial Park, reduction or relocation of substations, minor adjustment of height of the Randwick stabling facility and realignment of the light rail and stops along Alison Road, as well as at the Anzac Parade/Alison Road intersection .
