The commuters can send a text to a standard short code number and the Netsize system will charge the fare directly to the customer’s mobile phone bill.

They will receive an SMS in return with a code that has to be displayed to bus controller on request or entered into the vending machine to get a printed copy of metro ticket.

"Customers love the ease and accessibility of SMS ticketing, which does away with the struggle to find the right change."

This direct operator billing solution is available to subscribers of the four major Italian mobile network operators.

Gemalto Netsize senior vice-president Benoit Bole said: "SMS ticketing delivers an easier ride for travellers and outstanding efficiency benefits for transport providers.
