GDS Bombadier

Running over 100km from Reading to Heathrow in the west, through new tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project. Crossrail will transform rail transport in London, increasing capacity by 10%, supporting regeneration and cutting journey times across the city.

Bombardier Transportation was awarded the £1.3bn contract with Transport for London to deliver 65 nice-car trains for Crossrail. Each carriage will be equipped with four GDS PIS screens, using LCD TFT technology.

For this Crossrail contract, GDS has developed a 282 display solution based on an established display product, using core GDS technologies (such as G+Bond™, which is GDS’s proprietary optical bonding treatment), to provide a proven ruggedised solution. This, together with GDS’s long-life LED backlight and other company technologies, lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO) for the PIS system. Enhanced contrast and improved brightness make the display easier to read and compliant with TSI and EN50155 requirements.

"We offer displays with long-life components that match the 35-year product design-life Bombardier has requested from GDS. We are proud to be part of this challenging project, which confirms once again GDS’s investments and capabilities in the railway industry", said Ivano Pozza, GDS display division manager.
