Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail has completed the acquisition of global railway signalling technology provider ECM.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Italy-based ECM will become a part of Progress Rail’s existing signal division as part of the development, while continuing to conduct its signal production and engineering operations at its facility in Pistoia.

Progress Rail president and CEO Billy Ainsworth said: “Broadening our signal portfolio will enable Progress Rail to better serve our customers.

ECM is primarily engaged in the design, manufacture and provision of advanced signal systems and products, including computer-based interlocking and automatic train protection systems.

The company also develops different signal products such as power supplies, LED signal lights, axle counters, remote control and diagnostics.

ECM former owners Mario and Roberto Cappellini said: “We have decided to put ECM in the hands of an international leader in rail and transit products and services to ensure the company, which we have created and developed over more than 50 years, has the opportunity to develop further in international markets and prosper long term.

“For our part, we will provide Progress Rail and Caterpillar with all the support necessary to maximise existing know-how.”
