The Government of Victoria in Australia is set to upgrade several important railway stations in Melbourne in order to improve their accessibility, safety and security.

A new entrance to platform 10 at Flinders Street Station is currently being built under the initiative, which will provide direct access to the platform from Southbank’s Riverside Walk and reduce congestion at the Elizabeth Street subway.

The construction works form part of the state government’s wider A$100m ($79.63m) Flinders Street Station redevelopment programme.

The new entrance is scheduled to open in April.

In addition, the construction of the first stage of the Jewell Station Precinct development is slated to begin this week.

"We’re getting things done: building the Metro Tunnel, removing level crossings and investing in vital infrastructure upgrades across the city to get people home safer and sooner."

The refurbishment works are slated to include an overhaul of the Upfield bike path and are intended to improve passenger accessibility, as well as increase the amount of bike parking space at the site.

The provincial government has also allocated A$134m ($106.7m) to upgrade the safety of the City Loop, which is a railway system that serves the central business district of Melbourne.

City Loop’s operator Metro Trains Melbourne has awarded a new A$70m ($55.7m) contract to RCR Tomlinson to upgrade fire safety systems within the three stations as part of the project.

The deal will also see RCR Tomlinson install new platform smoke extraction systems at the sites, as well as upgraded the stations’ sprinklers for fire emergencies.

The installation of the alarm systems has already started and is anticipated to be completed by the end of next year.

Victoria Acting Premier James Merlino said: “We’re getting things done: building the Metro Tunnel, removing level crossings and investing in vital infrastructure upgrades across the city to get people home safer and sooner, every day.”

All of the projects are being conducted as part of the Government of Victoria’s A$30bn ($23.89bn) development programme, which aims to improve transportation across the region.
