The UK’s Network Rail has invested more than £2.2m for the renewal of the Chiltern main line between London Marylebone and Bicester.

As the upgrade work will be executed during the latest period of national lockdown, the closures will impact only a small section of passengers.

Some routes will be closed as old track will be replaced by new modern railway lines.

Network Rail central route director Dave Penney said: “While passenger numbers are still low, we’re making sure the Chiltern main line is in the best possible shape ready to welcome passengers back when lockdown measures are eased.

“For those who are still travelling by rail for reasons permitted by the government, I’d urge people to check National Rail Enquiries before they set off on their journey so they know what to expect.”

Chiltern Railways commercial and customer strategy director Eleni Jordan said: “The important track replacement work being carried out by Network Rail will ensure that we can continue to provide a safe, reliable and punctual service for our customers when restrictions on travel are eased. Customers who need to travel during these dates should check their journey via the Chiltern website or app before starting their journey.”

Network Rail recently completed a £3.7m upgrade project on the Wakefield railway bridge in Crofton, which was built more than 140 years ago.

Carrying the Knottingley to Leeds line, the old bridge was replaced by a newer version to ensure safe and reliable passenger and freight services.

The teams executed vital work on-site over the last four months.
