TriMet, the transport operator for the Portland metropolitan area in the US, has contracted Siemens Mobility to perform mid-life overhaul services for its Type-2 and Type-3 light-rail vehicle (LRV) fleet.
The LRV fleet comprises 79 Siemens Mobility SD660 units and are among the 119 Siemens-delivered trains that are currently being used by TriMet.

The overall contract values around €80m, with options for €25m more.
Under the terms of the contract, the first two pilot LRVs will be refurbished at the Siemens Mobility West Coast Rail Services Hub, situated in greater Sacramento, California.
The remaining vehicles will be overhauled at the newly opened Siemens Mobility Rail Services facility in Clackamas, Oregon. Initial project works are slated to complete in 2025.
The Clackamas site is expected to hire more than 15 employees over the course of the refurbishment project.

The overhauling of the LRVs, most of which have been in operation since the mid to late 1990s, is expected to extend their work life and improve customer experience.
TriMet placed its first LRV contract with Siemens in 1995, ordering 46 SD660 vehicles. It was followed by orders for an additional 33 SD660 vehicles over five years.
