Thales has acquired Danish driver-advisory specialist Cubris in an attempt to boost its traffic management capability.

Cubris specialises in developing driver advisory systems (DAS) for mainline applications. Its Greenspeed DAS system optimises driving and reduces CO₂ emissions by facilitating a real-time and secure exchange of information between the railway system and the train driver.

The system is currently being used by Danish State Railways (DSB) and Lokaltog in Denmark, South Western Railway in the UK and Transdev in Sweden. It is also being implemented by Transdev in Germany and VR in Finland.

Thales ground transportation systems executive vice-president Millar Crawford said: “With the acquisition of Cubris we are paving the way for improved rail efficiency and autonomous train.

“Combined with our established expertise in other key digital assets, Cubris’ talents and technologies represent a tremendous accelerator of our digital strategy for the benefit of our rail customers.”

Thales expects the acquisition to boost its offering and positioning within the rail traffic management segment.
