A joint venture (JV) of Talgo and Systra has secured a $138.9m contract from the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) in the US to rebuild up to 121 Bombardier passenger rail cars.
The JV has received a base order to overhaul 50 cars, while the contract for the remaining 71 cars is subject to availability of funds.

The scope of works on the Bombardier passenger rail cars encompasses a variety of upgrades to improve their overall reliability and performance of the fleet.
It includes modernising control voltage and battery system, lighting, passenger communication system and replacing the HVAC systems.
Additionally, the Talgo-Systra JV will upgrade door operators and controls, remodel restrooms, provide new seat cushions, install floor covering and repaint the exterior.
All overhauling works will be carried out at Talgo’s facilities in Milwaukee.

The deliveries of the first cars are scheduled to begin 450 days following the notice to proceed.
Remaining units will be delivered in batches of five every 90 days, with the 50th car expected to be supplied in April 2023.
The Bombardier rail fleet is operated by SCRRA’s Metrolink, a commuter rail system in Southern California.
