The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has issued an operating licence to the Stadler-built SMILE high-speed train.

Named Giruno by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the high-speed train is capable of operating at 200km/h on single traction on the domestic network.

The operating licence will enable SBB to deploy the Giruno train for operations later this year.

Stadler’s SMILE high-speed train has completed several test journeys since 2017 in Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Germany, the four countries where it is scheduled to run.

Covering a length of up to 400m in double traction, the Giruno train accommodates a total of 810 seats for passengers.

The trains also feature a low-floor entrance customised for different platform heights in four countries.

Additionally, the Giruno meets all requirements of the Law on Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities and features twice the number of wheelchair-accessible areas and toilets than legally required.

Overall, each unit features power outlets at all seats, large luggage racks, gender-separated toilets and an LED lighting system to save energy.

The Giruno high-speed train was developed by Stadler as a part of the contract with SBB to deliver 29 multi-system trains. The contract included the option for the delivery of 92 additional units.

SBB ordered the new vehicles to fulfil the growing the demand of services following the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel at the end of 2016.

Headquartered in Bussnang, Switzerland, Stadler focuses on delivering rail vehicle construction solutions.

Last week, Stadler was commissioned by German public transport operator BOGESTRA to deliver six city-rail vehicles and modernise existing 25 B80D trains.
