The 4.3-mile extension will provide the communities of Cambridge, Somerville and Medford with a one-seat journey to downtown Boston.

“The three communities where the Green Line Extension project is being constructed have been engaged in this process for nearly 20 years.”

Construction is set to start later this year, with the service likely to commence in 2021.

Alongside the design and construction of a new vehicle maintenance facility, the project includes the construction of an administration building, a relocated station, a viaduct, six new stations, six bridges, and a community path.

STV vice-president and Boston office manager Mark Pelletier said: “The three communities where the Green Line Extension project is being constructed have been engaged in this process for nearly 20 years.

“They are knowledgeable, passionate and excited to have public transportation being made available to them. We look forward to working with them, the MBTA, and the Fluor/Middlesex/Herzog/Balfour Beatty team in making this project a reality.”

Upon becoming operational, the MBTA extension is expected to reduce the distance travelled by regional vehicles by 26,000 miles, and will help to improve air quality and decrease vehicle congestion in the commonwealth.

STV has already completed the North Station Transportation Improvement Project for the MBTA, where the elevated section of the Green Line’s viaduct was transferred into a tunnel section.
