Design firm Stantec and its partner Amec Foster Wheeler have secured a contract to provide technical assistance for Metrolinx’s Bowmanville Rail Expansion project in Ontario, Canada.

The scope of the contract is set to include the provision of advisory, design and construction support services for the development.

The commuter rail expansion project is expected to extend Metrolinx’s GO Transit service along its Lakeshore East rail corridor by 20km from Oshawa to Bowmanville.

Stantec transportation vice-president Gregg Cooke said: “The Bowmanville rail expansion represents an exciting investment in Durham Region, one that will greatly enhance its transportation infrastructure.”

The contract will see the partners offer technical services related to the addition of two GO Transit tracks, a new layover facility, four new stations and 19 grade separations / bridge expansions, including a grade separation over Highway 401.

Stantec and Amec Foster Wheeler will also assist Metrolinx in carrying out associated works for the new infrastructure, as well as the modification of several culvert and at-grade crossings.

Stantec senior project manager and rail sector lead Richard Lanyi said: “This project impacts several municipal districts, Durham Region, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, and CP Rail.

“Stakeholder engagement and consultation has been a high priority for Metrolinx, and will continue to be a high priority with the added Stantec / Amec Foster Wheeler team on this project.”

Metrolinx plans to complete the construction work by the end of 2023.
