According to Alstom, the total acquisition costs are 20% lower than those of the previous generation of trains. The new fleet’s modular interior design is expected to increase passenger areas by 20% and will be able to accommodate up to 740 passengers in the highest capacity configuration envisaged by SNCF.

“This order is the successful fruit of the collaborative work of SNCF and Alstom. Alstom’s Avelia Horizon solution meets the technological, economic and  competitiveness challenges of SNCF.”

The Avelia Horizon trains will be 200m long, though the number of passenger coaches will vary between seven, eight and nine. They will have a maximum speed of 350km/h, a maximum output of 8MW and a maximum axleload of 17tonnes.

The new train features a regenerative braking energy system that will reduce energy consumption by 20%. Maintenance costs are also expected to be over 30% lower than those currently recorded by SNCF.

Many of the components of the train have an optimised design to allow longer intervals between maintenance interventions.
