Sound Transit has awarded Swedish company Skanska a $778m contract to construct the Lynnwood Link Extension L300 Main Package in Washington, US.

The project is situated in Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood in Washington.

According to the contract, Skanska will be responsible for the construction of a guideway from Shoreline to Lynnwood, which will span more than 6km (3.8miles).

The project also includes an aerial guideway of 3.5km, two elevated stations and a five-story parking garage.

The Lynnwood link extension is a 13.7km-long new light rail link between Northgate and Lynnwood in Seattle, Washington.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $2.9bn, of which $1.17bn will come from the Funding Grant Agreement executed by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

The Lynnwood link extension will continue along the I-5 corridor with four new stations in Lynnwood, Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Seattle.

With the rail link, the journey from Lynnwood to Westlake in downtown Seattle is estimated to take 28 minutes.

Passengers can travel from Shoreline South/145th to the University of Washington in 11 minutes and Mountlake Terrace to Bellevue Downtown in 48 minutes.

In September, Sound Transit started the construction of the Lynnwood Link Extension.

The project will be completed by mid-2024 and Sound Transit plans to operate trains every four to six minutes at peak weekday hours.

In June, Skanska secured an Nkr982m ($113.4m) contract to build a subsection of the light-rail system in Bergen, Norway.
