Singapore’s Land Transport Authority has announced that it will acquire 17 two-car trains to increase the capacity of the Sengkang-Punggol LRT’s (SPLRT).
After the acquisition, the number of two-car trains in the SPLRT fleet will increase to twice its current fleet size.

The SPLRT fleet now features around 16 two-car trains and 25 one-car trains.
LTA stated that the current 3.5ha SPLRT depot will be extended to 11.1ha to enhance stabling capacity and generate more space for maintenance facilities.
Located above the North East Line’s depot in Sengkang, the expanded SPLRT depot will consist of a new maintenance workshop and train stabling area, as well as two new reception tracks to reduce the train launching time.
Under the depot expansion project, the SPLRT’s power supply systems will also be augmented to aid the operations of the extra trains. Three new traction power stations will also be added.

The depot expansion works will start by the end of the year and be finished by 2027.
In January, LTA granted the second civil contract for the construction of Johor Bahru – Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link to China Communications Construction Company (Singapore Branch).
Valued at $180m, the contract included the construction of the RTS Link viaduct and tunnels in Singapore.
Standing 25m above the Straits of Johor, the viaduct will run within Singapore’s territory and connect to the RTS Link Woodlands North station through underground tunnels.
Construction for the RTS Link viaduct and tunnels has been scheduled for Q2 2021.
The RTS Link passenger service is expected to commence at the end of 2026.
