Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) is set to carry out enhanced security trials at selected MRT stations across all lines for a period of six months.

The security trials are scheduled to begin from 12 November.

Data and information obtained from the trials will be utilised to optimise security screening processes at all MRT stations.

It will also help LTA to reduce the impact of security screening processes on regular rail operations.

The statutory board will procure feedback from daily commuters, as well as public transport operators to enhance the effectiveness of such exercises in future.

LTA chief executive and Public Transport Security Committee chairman Ngien Hoon Ping said: “Our public transport system is a key infrastructure serving millions of commuters every day. We must remain vigilant against individuals who may be carrying dangerous items that can cause harm to the public.

“By the end of this year, public transport operators will also progressively introduce the use of handheld metal detectors in their security checks at bus interchanges and MRT stations.

“We will continue to enhance our security measures and ensure that the transport system remains safe and secure for all commuters.”

Trials will see the deployment of walk-through metal detectors and X-ray scanners before the station fare gates to screen passengers.

Screening devices will be deployed at up to six stations at a time.

Next month, LTA is scheduled to carry out an Exercise Station Guard drill with SBS Transit at the North East Line’s Hougang Station.

Such exercises are carried out periodically by the LTA to assess their operational readiness to tackle potential emergencies and security threats.
