The Government of Canada has agreed to invest in two railway projects in the province of Saskatchewan as part of its plan to upgrade transport infrastructure.

The first project involves upgrading the Great Sandhills Railway shortline between Burstall and the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline outside Swift Current.

Once complete, the project will increase the capacity of the line and facilitate freight movement to the port for export. It will also help to support future growth in operations.

The second project involves building three loop tracks and a repair shop at North West Terminal outside Unity in Saskatchewan.

It will reduce bottlenecks and improve rail transportation on the Canadian National and Pacific mainline tracks along the Edmonton corridor. Furthermore, the works will help to increase rail traffic volumes on the lines.

Overall, the federal government will invest a total of C$12.4m ($9.34m) in the two projects. During construction, the projects are expected to create around 300 jobs.

Once complete, the projects will enhance rail capacity, as well as provide shippers with better access to two railways.

Canadian Minister of Transport Marc Garneau said: “Our government is investing in Canada’s economy by making improvements to our trade and transportation corridors.

“We are supporting projects to efficiently move goods to market and people to their destinations, stimulate economic growth, create quality middle-class jobs, and ensure that Canada’s transportation networks remain competitive and efficient.”

Currently, Canada is investing in several infrastructure projects to streamline freight transportation and support exports.

Last week, the Canadian Government announced C$20m ($15.1m) investment to increase rail capacity near Abbotsford, British Columbia.
