The 350km Belgrade-Budapest line originally opened to international traffic in the 19th century and since then has served as an important rail corridor between Central and Southeast Europe.

The upgrade project is being developed in three stages and is expected to reduce direct journey times between the two European capitals to around three hours from the current eight hours.

Overhaul works have already commenced on the Serbian section of the line.
