As part of the Aurecon Jacobs Mott MacDonald joint venture (AJM JV), Australia-based Rail Projects Victoria has appointed Jacobs Engineering Group as technical adviser to improve railway infrastructure.

As a result, the JV will provide technical support to the Victorian Rail Infrastructure Program (VRIP), which has been designed to assess various options to bolster railway connectivity across the Australian province.

Jacobs Buildings, Infrastructure and Advanced Facilities senior vice-president Patrick Hill said: “Alongside Rail Projects Victoria, Jacobs is already helping improve connectivity and livelihoods for the travelling public – and this new appointment creates an opportunity for our team to help shape the next decade of improvements across the rail network.

VRIP will evaluate the feasibility of faster railway connectivity, electrification, integrated corridor planning, and deployment of dedicated rolling stock capable of running at higher speeds than the currently operating trains.

It will also assess the need for new demand corridors in Victoria.

In Victoria, Jacobs, in partnership with Aurecon and Mott MacDonald, has been associated with multiple rail projects during the past three and half years including the Ballarat Line Upgrade and the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project.

Last month, Jacobs Engineering Group, in a JV with GHD, secured a contract from Australian Rail Track (ARTC) in New South Wales.

The JV is responsible for carrying out a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment for a 300km new track of the Inland Rail programme.
