A joint venture comprising NRC Group Finland (NRC) and construction company YIT has secured a contract to deliver the €386m Jokeri Light Rail line in Finland.

Espoo and Helsinki have approved the appointment of the joint venture, while official contracts are scheduled to be signed next month.

Once built, the Jokeri Light Rail will offer a fast light railway connection between Itäkeskus in Helsinki and Keilaniemi in Espoo.

The rail link will offer faster inter-city transportation alternative to the commuters between Helsinki and Espoo.

According to the preliminary plan, track construction works are expected to begin in June, with the overall project slated for completion in June 2024.

The Jokeri Light Rail project will be carried out under the alliance model where the client organisation is formed by combining the two cities with the contractors and consultants.

NRC and YIT are the contractors for the project, while Ramboll Finland, Sitowise and NRC Group Finland are part of the client organisation as consultants.

NRC Group CEO Øivind Horpestad said: “We are very proud to be an alliance partner for the construction of the Jokeri Light Rail line, reflecting several years of hard work by NRC Group Finland.

“For us, it is a record project in terms of size and scope and a confirmation of the position we have built as the leading Nordic rail infrastructure company.”

The cost of building the Jokeri Light Rail line will be shared by the two cities, with Helsinki contributing €268m. The remaining €118m of the estimated cost will be borne by Espoo.
