Vertex was awarded M-1002 Initial Certification by the Association of American Railroads, which is stated to cover 'new, general service non-pressurised tank cars built to new US Department of Transportation DOT-117 specifications’.

The company can now begin manufacturing the DOT-117 railcars following this approval.

DOT-117 railcars have been specially optimised to resolve various safety issues faced by the old tank cars, which have subsequently been designated for renovation or retirement.

Vertex received a contract from Trinity Chemical for nearly 350 coiled and insulated DOT-117 tank cars in June, which are intended for deployment in the crude oil and chemical markets.

The company has also received an order for 100 ethanol tank cars from real estate developers based in Wilmington, North Carolina, for use at their Indiana ethanol plant.

Vertex is currently manufacturing two variants of tank cars and four types of freight wagons.

The company previously reported to have received a contract from Tealinc to deliver its optimised 2480 CF aggregate car.

Additionally, it has received another order from an unnamed company for its light-weight 7500CF wood-chip car.

Vertex CEO Donald Croteau said: “The 7500 CF wood-chip car is a new design for VRC, but the 2480CF aggregate car is consistent with cars we are building now.”

The company is expected to begin the delivery of the railcars from the end of 2017.
