The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has allocated $48.3m to North Carolina and Virginia for the development of the south-east high-speed rail corridor, which will link Raleigh and North Carolina to Washington DC through Richmond.

Virginia will receive $44.3m to conduct an environmental analysis and identify potential track alignments for the high-speed rail link between Richmond and Washington.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation will contribute $11.1m to this project.

North Carolina will receives about $4m for the design and construction of a new connection between Raleigh and Richmond, which will reduce travel time between the two cities to just two hours .

The North Carolina Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, will contribute $3.9m for the project.

The passenger rail will also help to ease traffic congestion at sections of I-95, foster economic development and provide the public with a more flexible way to travel.
