New York State will receive $150m in US federal transportation funding to upgrade passenger service on Amtrak’s Empire Corridor.

Out of the funds, $91m will be spent to add 17 miles of new track between the Albany-Rensselaer and Schenectady stations where the existing single track owned by CSX is shared by Amtrak and freight trains.

Another $58m will be invested for track and platform improvements at Albany-Rensselaer and Schenectady as well as relocation of signal wires on the Hudson Line south of Albany.

The project is expected to improve Amtrak’s Empire Service, Lake Shore, Maple Leaf, Adirondack and Ethan Allen Express.

Work on the projects is expected to begin in Q2 2012.
