The UK Department for Transport has officially awarded the new Essex Thameside franchise to its current operator, c2c.
The 15-year contract forms a part of the UK Government’s multi-billion pound investment to improve travel between London and the commuter hubs of Barking, Basildon, Southend and further afield.
Under the contract, c2c will operate and improve £160m worth of passenger services on the franchise.
Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "The Essex Thameside franchise provides a vital service for tens of millions of passengers every year and with this deal, we have ensured that they are going to see real improvements. New trains, more seats and free Wi-Fi are some of the benefits that commuters can look forward to.
"It is further proof that our franchising programme is back on track, playing a key role in a long-term economic plan that is driving forward our economy and benefiting hard-working people."
The contract also includes the delivery of an additional fleet of 17 new trains, which will provide 4,800 extra seats and step-free access at all stations for passengers with mobility difficulties.
