Thales has secured a contract from the Taipei Rapid Transit to upgrade the city’s metro network fare collection system with its new generation TransCity solution.

According to Taipei Rapid Transit, which operates the concession for the metro network in Taipei, Taiwan, Thales’s fare collection solution will be rolled out progressively throughout 2016 with no service disruptions.

Scope of work will involve upgrading the entire metro network, including more than 1,500 fare gates across 120 stations, which have a daily flow of more than 1.97 million passengers.

Thales’ solution includes the replacement of contactless smartcard readers for existing fare gates and management in back-office of secured transactions.

The upgrade contract follows the initiative of Taiwan’s Ministry of Transport and Communications to respond to the need for wider interoperability.

The solution will ensure the fast flow of any passenger coming from Taipei, Kaohsiung or Taichung using his own card, through the gates to enter or exit the Taipei metro network.

The company has been providing its ticketing solutions in Taipei since 2000, when the first chip card EasyCard was introduced.

In January, Delhi Metro Rail (DMRC) in India awarded Thales a contract to upgrade fare collection systems across the metro’s Phase I and Phase II stations.

Under the deal, Thales was responsible for providing additional ticketing machines and access gates to improve passengers travel facilities and comfort.
