French technology group Thales has agreed to supply its new On Board Video 8000 solution to Paris transport operator Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), in an effort to enhance passenger safety and protect property.

A contract to this effect was signed by Thales and RATP, co-financed by the Paris regional transport authority Syndicat des Transports d’Île-de-France.

The contract includes the deployment of On Board Video 8000 solution in 1,000 trams and buses in the country, in order to perform better checks on public transport and control activities such as vandalism, assaults and antisocial behaviour.

"Thales has deployed video protection systems in around 4,000 RATP-operated buses and trams."

The On Board Video 8000 solution features the latest image compression standards and is compatible with the previous-generation system.

This solution enables video metadata tagging, by making the video footage search easy.

Thales has deployed video protection systems in around 4,000 RATP-operated buses and trams since 2002.

More than 6,500 Thales videoprotection systems are being used on the Paris RER suburban rail network, operated by SNCF, the Transdev Paris East bus lines and the Bordeaux tram network in France.

The systems are being used to record, retrieve, analyse and exploit audiovisual information from cameras installed in passenger spaces.

A consortium led by Thales was awarded a contract worth €100m by PKP Polish Lines earlier this month to implement a European railway traffic management system (ERTMS) on two sections of the Warszawa-Lódz Line.
