Nagpur Metro Rail (NMRCL) has appointed a consortium led by French engineering and consulting group Systra as the general consultant for the development of the first phase of India’s Nagpur Metro.

The consortium includes US engineering company Aecom, France-based Egis Rail and Indian engineering consultancy company Rites.

The new contract will help Systra strengthen its position in the supervision of urban transport infrastructure projects in the peninsular.

Systra Asia-Pacific regional director Jean-Charles Vollery said: "NMRCL has chosen SYSTRA as general consultant for the creation of the first two lines in this city of more than two million inhabitants.

"The award of this new contract to Systra, in addition to the six projects already underway in Indian megacities, highlights the confidence shown by the Indian transport authorities in our ability to manage complex projects."

The Nagpur metro rail will comprise two lines, with the first line running for approximately 20km and the second for 18.5km.

The first line will connect the two main gateways of Nagpur running from Kamptee in the north of the city to Wardha in the south.

Of the 17 stations covered by the first line, 15 will be elevated.

The line will serve the city’s current international airport, the future neighbourhood to be built under the MIHAN project and the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur.

The second line will have 19 elevated stations, and run east to west thereby connecting Bhandara and Hingna.

The line will serve the central train station, the economic hub and its university districts, as well as additional residential areas of the city.

Last year, the group was awarded three large-scale metro projects in Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata.
