Dutch company Strukton Rail has received a contract to install the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on a test track between Katrineholm and Åby in Sweden on behalf of transport administration Trafikverket.

Trafikverket intends to assess the effectiveness of this system in a real railway environment without affecting traffic.

Strukton Rail location manager Eva Spove said: “We will parallelise the ATC signals of the track with the two different ERTMS systems to be tested.

“We will install signalling coders at the end of the track, sending information to the onboard equipment on the track's test train, which of the ERTMS systems the train will follow.”

ERTMS is a system introduced within the European Union member nations to simplify rail transport between countries (interoperability) and release time for denser traffic.

Sweden still uses the older ATC signalling system and is in the process of installing ERTMS.

By 2035, ERTMS is expected to be installed in the whole European continent.

Under the contract, Strukton will have responsibility to prepare the test track technology for the new system. It will also install balises, substations, electrical and telecommunications equipment and deliver signalling connections between new and existing technology.

Contracted work is scheduled to start this week and is expected to be complete in November.

In May, Strukton Rolling Stock signed an agreement with Chinese company SiCC to provide technical knowledge, design and production of key components for Ji’nan metro in Shandong province in China.
