Siemens has been contracted to deliver 30 Vectron trains to full-service locomotive leasing company Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE).

The deal will see ten units delivered for use as multisystem Vectron MS locomotives for cross-border operations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands, while the remaining 20 will operate as direct-current trains (Vectron DC) in Italy.

Siemens is scheduled to begin delivery of the trains from January next year.

MRCE CEO Junichi Kondo said: “With this new order, our Vectron fleet will grow to a total of 111 locomotives. Our customers throughout Europe value the reliability and flexibility of the Siemens locomotive.”

The contract also includes an option for the delivery of a further 20 units.

The contracted multisystem Vectron MS locomotives can operate at a maximum speed of 160km/h with a maximum output of 6,400kW, while the Vectron DC has an output of 5,200kW.

Both variants of the Vectron feature national train control systems. The MS locomotives are also equipped with the European Train Control System.

MRCE is a subsidiary of Japan-based firm Mitsui & Co and operates a fleet of more than 300 electric locomotives.

The company has one office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which is responsible for operational leasing, procurement, financing and locomotive sales, as well as a site in Munich, Germany, that conducts maintenance and the technical servicing of the company's fleet.
