Porr Polska Construction executive board member Siegfried Weindok said: “One factor that we particularly welcome: this time it wasn’t the lowest offer price that was decisive in securing the tender.

“The modernisation project will include 142km of track, as well as the overhaul of 91 turnouts and the partial renovation of the catenary.”

“The primary reason we were chosen was the optimisation of the construction schedule and reducing track closure time.”

The modernisation programme will also involve upgrading control and safety technology systems and installation of two new electronic signal boxes.

Trains on the line are currently running at speeds between 50km/h and 100km/h. It is hoped the locomotives will be able to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h for passenger trains and up to 80 km/h for freight following the modernisation.

The programme is expected to require 32 months to complete from the date of commencement, and is also intended to increase the capacity of line Nr. 354 and improve overall passenger comfort.
