Contractor Orascom Construction has secured two contracts worth €270m for work on Cairo metro in Egypt.

The contract includes civil and track work and will bring the company’s share of the third phase to €375m.

Orascom Construction’s CEO Osama Bishai said: "We are pleased to expand our market share in the transportation sector and particularly the Cairo metro programme.

"We remain focused on adding quality contracts to our backlog, which will lead to healthy returns for our shareholders."

Orascom will complete the civil package in a consortium with Vinci, Bouygues and Arab Contractors.

Work will also be carried out by TSO, which is a part of France’s NGE Group and ETF. Construction will involve 18km of tunnels and viaducts, as well as 15 elevated stations and 30 underground stations.

Orascom won a $180m contract for work on the first phase of the expansion and $140m contract for the second phase of the third metro line in 2007 and 2009, respectively.

Earlier this April, a consortium comprising Egis Rail, ACE, and EHAF was led by Systra and secured a €60m contract with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels to provide general consultancy services for phase three of Cairo metro line 3.
