US-based MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) is set to carry out major upgrades to equipment along the Astoria's N Line.

The upgrades works will see switches replaced to reduce noise across the 31st Street corridor, as well as various other track refurbishments intended to reduce delays and increase the reliability of rail services.

New York City Council District 22 council member Costa Constantinides said: “This critical infrastructure improvement has been long-anticipated.

“The MTA’s commitment to replace switches, track panels, and steel girders will increase service reliability and will significantly mitigate noise from the overhead structure.”

NYCT plans to complete the $12.4m project in eight non-consecutive weekend closures, which are scheduled to begin this month and carry on intermittently through September.

The development will entail the replacement of all switches along a 730ft span of elevated track south of the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station. The working crew will also replace the track panels and steel girders that support the structure.

The amount of noise from passing trains along the elevated portion of the Astoria line is expected to be reduced upon the refurbishment's completion.

NYCT acting president Darryl Irick said: “We strive to be good neighbours while providing safe and reliable service, which is why we scheduled the closures during period of light ridership in order to minimise the impact to customers.

“This work will increase reliability of service and reduce train noise: two things the community has long asked for from MTA.”

The replacement work is scheduled to start on the weekend of 20-22 Mayand will be completed by 11 September.
