Polish train manufacturer Newag has signed a contract with Warsaw Commuter Rail (WKD) to supply six new electric multiple units, which will operate on the Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa suburban light rail line to increase capacity.

The contract, which forms a part of the Swiss-Polish Programme of Cooperation, seeks to deliver improved quality and enhanced passenger safety.

Each six-car train will be equipped with a fully integrated passenger information system with external LED destination boards and internal LCD monitors.

The 60m-long trains will also feature a monitoring system with an event recorder and air-conditioning.

Delivery of the trains will take place over the next two years.

With a capacity to accommodate approximately 164 passengers, the trains will offer services to passengers from Michalowice, Pruszków, Brwinów, Milanówek, Podkowa Lesna, Grodzisk Mazowiecki, as well as Wlochy and Ochota in Warsaw.

The trains will also have four designated places for wheelchairs with removable ramps, as well as eight designated places for transporting bicycles.

A total of zl124.7m ($39.19m) is being invested in the procurement of new rolling stock, station enhancements and the installation of a new passenger information system.
