Network Rail is planning to use tilting track trains and laser-guided technology to renew the track layout at Wigan’s Wallgate station in the UK.

The work includes replacement of eight sets of points, which are used to switch trains from one track to another, renewal of 1,000m of railway line and realignment of the signalling and overhead power line equipment to match the new track layout.

The new sets of points will be delivered to the worksites on tilting track trains. These trains save time and offer cost savings because they can be delivered as required on trains that can carry them upright, but then tilt over as cranes lower them into position using a laser-guided process.

The £3.8m project will improve reliability of the railway in and around Wigan.
