The Access for All scheme is managed by NR and funded by the DfT, to improve accessibility at train stations. The programme includes installing lifts and ramps to make stations step-free and accessible to all passengers, including those with reduced mobility, children, heavy luggage or shopping.

Improvements carried out to the station include the installation of a new footbridge with passenger lifts to either platform.

UK rail minister Claire Perry said: "We are transforming our railways through record levels of investment, and improving accessibility at Birchwood station is an important part of this work.

"The Access for All scheme helps to make using the railway even easier for millions of people who travel by train every year."
