Japan-based Mitsubishi Electric has secured a contract from the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) for the verification and testing of interoperability with the existing communications-based train control (CBTC).
The Japanese firm aims to become a CBTC manufacturer for NYCT as it enters the US railway market’s signalling business sector.

NYCT has currently planned the systemwide implementation of an interoperable CBTC system in all subway lines by multiple CBTC manufacturers.
The transit authority currently uses two interoperable CBTC manufacturers and intends to qualify additional companies.
With this contract, NYCT is qualifying a third CBTC manufacturer to solicit additional competition and maintain longer-term and stable procurement of CBTC products.
The authority has selected Mitsubishi Electric as the potential manufacturer of CBTC, following total evaluation of specification, delivery period and cost.

The Japanese firm will further strengthen the signalling business, upon the receipt of this award for the CBTC verification testing from NYCT.
As part of its global expansion, Mitsubishi Electric’s Indian subsidiary opened a new factory for transportation systems in Bidadi, near Bengaluru, last November.
The company is targeting annual revenues of $170m from the transportation systems business in India by fiscal 2020, by enhancing sales and maintenance services for subways and trains.
The $8m Bidadi factory will produce traction inverters, motors and other electrical equipment for rolling stock for metro systems, and assemble electrical propulsion equipment for rolling stock. It also has an equipment maintenance facility.
