Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric has secured a $15m contract from Siemens to deliver railcar air-conditioning systems, which will be used in Desiro High Capacity railcars operating on the Rhine-Ruhr express (RRX) train network in Germany.

The RRX train network connects cities and provinces in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region.

Under the deal, Mitsubishi will supply 328 air-conditioning systems for 82 trainsets totalling 164 cars.

Mitsubishi Electric Europe Transportation Systems business head Tetsuya Takahashi said: "Mitsubishi Electric considers Europe to be a key market with the highest demand in the world.

"Under the deal, Mitsubishi will supply 328 air-conditioning systems for 82 trainsets totalling 164 cars."

"This contract will not only enable us to bolster our presence on the continent, but also increase our links with car builders, railway operators and other local customers."

In April 2014, Mitsubishi established a new division for the Transportation Systems business at Mitsubishi Electric Europe, a sales subsidiary, to strengthen local and after sales.

The company also launched Mitsubishi Electric Klimat transportation systems to strengthen production and after sales of railcar air-conditioning systems in Europe.

In October, Mitsubishi acquired a 49% stake in MEDCOM, a railway vehicle electrical equipment manufacturer based in Poland.

In Europe, the company secured contracts for transportation systems, including an order received in 2014 from Deutsche Bahn for traction systems worth JPY3bn ($26.3m).

In January, the company became the first Japanese manufacturer of railcar main transformers to receive IRIS certification.
