The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Board has awarded a $210m contract for the preliminary design and construction management of the South Coast Rail Project.

Under the ten-year contract with Vanasse Hangen Brustlin (VHB)/HNTB Corporation, approximately $12m will be initially used to fund programme management, early design development and environmental permitting.

Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick said: "South Coast Rail will be a game changer for the region, providing a reliable public transit option for residents and businesses of the south coast.

"This historic project will help create new economic opportunity in communities along the rail corridor, opening up the area for the kind of growth we are seeing elsewhere throughout the Commonwealth."

Additional funding will be awarded in the succeeding years until it reaches the $210m contract limit.

The proposed electric commuter rail system would extend from Canton Junction to New Bedford and Fall River.

A total of 44 rail crossings and 34 bridges will be rebuilt as part of the project, which currently has an estimated budget of $2.3bn.
