Italy-based Maire Tecnimont, in a consortium with Saipem and Dodsal Engineering, has won a contract from Etihad Rail to carry out the first phase of rail project in UAE.

The rail project is being implemented at a cost of $880m, $280m of which is Maire Tecnimont’s share.

The contract involves the construction and design of a 266km network as well as civil and track works.

The first phase of the project will link the Western region cities of Habshan and Ruwais by 2013 and then to Shah and Habshan by 2014.

The project is expected to transport over 7Mtpa of sulphur and is part of Etihad Rail’s 1,200km rail network that will connect urban and remote communities as well as facilitate trade, open up communication channels and foster economic development.
