Germany-based Knorr-Bremse has won a contract from Brazilian railroad logistics operator RUMO/ALL to deliver upgraded braking systems for its 8,500 freight cars.

In addition to providing brake equipment to support the transportation of sugar cane, Knorr-Bremse will also be responsible for system maintenance for the next 15 years.

Knorr-Bremse Brazil sales rail vehicle systems head Everton Perreira said: "RUMO/ALL was looking for a dependable long-term partner to standardise its fleet.

"In Knorr-Bremse, the customer has found a partner who can assure the availability of components for regular operations and maintenance work, and at the same time, deliver high-quality products and services."

Under the deal, Knorr-Bremse will be responsible for the replacement and upgrade of the existing braking systems for 8,500 sugar cane wagon in the RUMO/ALL fleet.

The upgrade includes the installation of DB60-II control valves, accompanied with slack adjusters and other components in the braking systems that would be in line with South America’s AAR standard.

Knorr-Bremse Brazil Rail Services in charge Edson Pissolato said: "This feature makes it possible to replenish the cylinder pressure continuously while braking is still taking place and compensate for any leakage, which can be critical in particular during prolonged braking on gradients."

Knorr-Bremse Brazil has partnered with the group’s US subsidiary New York Air Brake (NYAB) to deliver the brake equipment order to RUMO/ALL.

The deal also includes maintenance of the existing products already deployed to the fleet by Knorr-Bremse before the modernisation project.
