The Indian government has approved a plan to build a rail link to Bangladesh at a cost of Rs2.6bn ($53m) to aid communication with the north-eastern states of the country.

Under the project, India will construct a 15km railway track linking Agartala with Bangladesh’s south-eastern city of Akhaurah.

The Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) will lay the new railway tracks on both sides of the border, including a 10km section on the Bangladesh side and 5km section on the Indian side.

The rail link will connect north-east India with Chittagong international sea port in Bangladesh.

The project is expected to be completed by 2014.
