The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) in Germany has deployed the new port railway IT system, transPORT rail, which marks an important step in the HPA’s smartPORT IT strategy.
The transPORT rail is a production-optimising rail logistics information system designed to help HPA to coordinate train trips and track occupation, support train loading works in the port and offer the transparent exchange of data between the parties.

Lufthansa Systems and DAKOSY have assisted HPA during the installation process, with approximately 50 developers and programmers being part of the system’s introduction.
Lufthansa Systems project coordinator Karsten Schumacher said: "transPORT rail is a flagship project for the railway as a mode of transport. With it, we are paving the way for more efficient port rail-way operations, thus securing the long-term future of the port."
With this new development, approximately 115 railway undertakings operating in the Port of Hamburg will benefit from the system by relying on automated communication through a data interface.
Also available through an online portal, the new system enables the individual programme components to be exchanged or adapted to future developments.

By GlobalDataThe Port of Hamburg manages roughly 200 freight trains or 5,000 wagons on a daily basis.
In July, nearly 5,286 trains or 138,449 wagons travelled the tracks of the port railway, an increase of roughly 10% over the same month last year.
In the first six months of 2014, rail freight volumes increased by 5.3% to 1.09 million standard containers compared with the same period last year.
