GMR Infrastructure-led consortium has won an INR2.67bn ($43.05m) contract for the construction of a new rail line between Jhansi and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Members of the consortium include Tata Projects and Kalindee Rail Nirman. They will look after the activities of the project.

Work under the new rail project includes roadbed construction, major and minor bridges, track linking, outdoor S&T works, OHE, TSS & general electrical works from Jhansi to Erich Road.

GMR urban infrastructure and highways CEO Arun Kumar Sharma said: "As a part of our asset light strategy, we are very happy to announce our first foray into the very promising railway construction sector.

"This win reflects our long term vision of building our EPC expertise in a niche segment like railways, and will pave the way for similar projects in future."

GMR’s share of the total investment will be about INR1.35bn ($21.77m). Construction of the project will start on 2 April, and is expected to be completed in 42 months.
